Hands that Saved the Khejri Trees

In 1730, in Khejarli, Rajasthan, Amrita Devi Bishnoi stood between soldiers and the sacred Khejri trees, putting herself in mortal danger to defend them. She, her daughters, and 363 community members sacrificed their lives to protect the trees, inspiring future environmental movements. Today, her legacy is honoured with the Amrita Devi Bishnoi National Award for Wildlife Conservation, showing that India’s commitment to conservation is homegrown.
